Blue Ribbon Award for Good Cause
63One of the most impressive things about the Blue Ribbon Award winning Millburn High School is that the students are brought up with a strong sense of the world around them. Hamsini Sridharan is a perfect example of a student in this venerable school system who has taken the knowledge that she has gained from the high school and used it to help parts of the world who are less fortunate. Sridharan spent last summer volunteering in India. While she was there she spent some of her time learning about North Indian culture and the rest working with underprivileged children, Tibetan refugees and orphans in the fifth grade. She also worked with underprivileged blind children, teaching shapes and numbers, in the city of Dehradun. When asked why she wanted to spend her summer in India, Sridharan explained that "This seemed like a good way to use my time to actually impact the world positively...Part of it was also that, compared to what I've seen in India, my life here is completely sheltered and wealthy and I wanted to help those who don't have that." Sridharan expresses a sentiment shared by many residents of the Millburn Short Hills area. New home owners are attracted to this area because they see that the people living in this area all seem to feel lucky and appreciative of their surroundings. What is wonderful is that so many of them, like Sridharan, take an extra step and try to share what they have with the world. Sridharan will be attending the University of Chicago in the fall of 2008 and hopes to continue helping the underprivileged across the globe.
