Millburn/Short Hills Gives Back: Emily Hughes
62In doing research for interesting information to highlight in my blog, I am continually in awe of the tireless efforts of Millburn/Short Hills community members to help out those in need. Here is yet another such example of this.
The students of the Millburn High School drama club banded together in an effort to raise a minimum of $1000 for AIDS/HIV research. Heading up this event was senior Emily Hughes, a four-year member of the drama club. Hughes and her peers sold tickets for the event to community members, who saw the performances on June 11 at 8:00 p.m. Participants in Millburn Cares perform various Broadway numbers and AIDS awareness skits. All of the proceeds were donated to a foundation called Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS which spreads awareness and helps fund medical research.
According to Hughes, this year's performances were meant to "put a face on HIV/AIDS". In this way, she hoped to "show the audience that this disease affects individuals, not just statistics." A resident of Millburn for the last 14 years, Hughes said that she is well aware of the town's compassion and dedication for coming together for causes. Hughes explained that "We are a privileged town and we have countless opportunities to give back to society; I know that Millburn will take advantage of this and help Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS in a significant way." Millburn Cares has already attracted patrons from across the state. Broadway House in Newark, NJ is one of five rehabilitation centers across the nation that caters exclusively to HIV/AIDS patients. Broadway House has magnanimously offered their support to Millburn Cares and will be speaking at the event next week.
With such generous support streaming in from across the state, it is no surprise that Millburn/Short Hills real estate is so popular. Buying a home in Millburn/Short Hills is especially appealing to parents who hope to raise children who are aware of societies' needs. Emily Hughes is certainly a homegrown example of this. Hughes is excited to be attending Villanova University in the fall, where she will undoubtedly continue her valuable work, spreading awareness for important causes.
